Chrysler’s celebrating the minivans’ anniversary! The first one was made on November 2, 1983... so that makes it, by Stellantis logic... the 40th anniversary? Or, by H2G2, it's 42!

Hi there. This is David Zats from
0:01
motel.com and I'm here to talk about the
0:04
anniversary of the minivan. The earliest
0:07
known work on the minivan at Chrysler
0:09
began around 1971, if you can believe
0:11
it. And at the time, they were looking
0:13
at two things. They had designers who
0:15
were looking at taking advantage of the
0:16
custom van craze. And they had product
0:20
planners who were looking at how the
0:22
station wagon wasn't quite cutting it.
0:24
and what they needed was a family
0:26
vehicle that could hold seven or eight
0:28
people and still fit inside your garage,
0:30
which left out the commercial vans. Both
0:33
of them after a year or two realized
0:35
that they couldn't just modify a regular
0:37
van, keeping in mind that the engine was
0:40
actually in the cabin with between the
0:42
driver and passenger and those things,
0:44
the old B vans and before them the A
0:46
vans. The A vans were probably the right
0:48
size, but the engine was still there
0:50
with you and that's heat and noise and
0:52
nobody wants that. and they saw what
0:55
they needed to do, which is among other
0:57
things, uh, flexible seating and have it
0:59
possible to walk from the front row into
1:01
the back row, which is great. And they
1:04
had pretty much what they were going to
1:06
do in the mid70s, including the look
1:08
that we got when the first, it was a
1:11
model year 1984, minivans rolled out in
1:14
n in November 2nd, 1983. And it's it's
1:18
kind of funny because Ford often gets
1:19
the credit for developing them, but Ford
1:22
had nothing to do with it. It was all a
1:24
homegrown effort. And it's also kind of
1:27
funny that they're celebrating the
1:28
anniversary now. Uh because they could
1:32
have celebrated it November 2nd, 2023.
1:36
Or they could have done it in 2024,
1:39
which because they were 1984 model year,
1:41
but they're doing it now in 2025 for
1:43
whatever reason. So, if you're
1:45
interested in more of the original
1:47
story, including uh what I learned from
1:50
the people who were there, from the
1:52
people in design and product planning
1:54
and engineering who actually developed
1:55
the original minivan, there's a lot of
1:57
fascinating stories there. It's in this
1:59
great book about minivans, as is
2:03
information about each successive
2:04
generation. All the stories I could
2:07
collect at the time, and I hope that
2:09
you'll pick up a copy wherever great
2:12
books are sold online. A season.
