So, we have two cars here.
0:01
They're both 1956.
0:03
They're from Chrysler Corporation. Their
0:06
bottom line was Plymouth.
0:08
Then they had Dodge, then they had
0:10
DeSoto for a while,
0:12
then Chrysler, and then at the top, on
0:14
and off again, was Imperial.
0:17
So, in 1956,
0:19
the Plymouth was the bottom of the
0:21
Chrysler offerings. A Plymouth was not
0:24
just a rebadged Dodge. Yes, they shared
0:26
some common things, but even within
0:29
General Motors and Dodges, the engines
0:31
were specific to those
0:33
uh manufacturers. So, our first car is a
0:36
1956 Plymouth Belvedere. This has been
0:39
owned by Paul Pessile. He is a member of
0:42
the Yesteryear Rusty Relics.
0:44
And he has owned this car for 55 years.
0:47
It was his first car.
0:49
He is the second owner, and it is a
0:51
numbers matching vehicle. It was
0:53
assembled July 14th, 1956 at Plymouth's
0:56
first factory, Lynch Road plant in
0:58
Detroit, and it is one of 27,098
1:02
Belvedere two-door hardtops produced in
1:04
the '56 model year.
1:06
The manufacturer suggested retail price
1:08
for this car, for the Plymouth Belvedere
1:10
V8, was $2,170.
1:14
Now, this was a very upscale Plymouth
1:16
because most Plymouths
1:17
would be a six-cylinder. So, this was a
1:19
V8. So, this is a high-end Plymouth.
1:22
So, this car was originally delivered to
1:23
a local dealership in Passaic, and it
1:26
was direct competition to Ford and
1:28
Chevy. So, total Plymouth production in
1:30
'56 was 521,000 cars. Chevy made 1.3
1:35
million cars, and Ford made 1.2 million
1:38
cars. However, back in the '30s,
1:40
Plymouth actually took second place uh
1:43
from Ford at one point. So, this
1:45
specific car has the optional 277 cubic
1:49
inch V8 rated at 187
1:51
horsepower. And that's brake horsepower
1:54
or gross horsepower, not what we measure
1:56
today, a little different measurement.
1:58
And it's the only 56 Plymouth model that
2:00
came standard with with the V8 was the
2:03
Belvedere convertible. Otherwise, it was
2:05
optional. If you wanted to move up from
2:07
this, there was an optional power pack,
2:10
277 cubic inch four-barrel version at
2:12
200 horsepower. So, this is the first
2:15
year that Plymouth division manufactured
2:17
its own V8 engine. So, that engine is
2:20
specific to Plymouth, not other Chrysler
2:22
products.
2:24
It is also the first model year for push
2:26
buttons on all 56 Plymouths with
2:28
automatic transmission. So, you think
2:31
the push buttons or dials or something
2:33
new on modern cars? Nope. Had them back
2:35
in the '50s. So, before the Fury model
2:38
was introduced in January '56, Belvedere
2:41
was the most expensive series, and this
2:43
car came in five body styles, not
2:45
counting the station wagon, which had
2:47
its own series called the Suburban. And
2:49
I think you can see a wooden version of
2:51
that just a little further down the
2:53
line. Belvederes had 12 solid exterior
2:55
colors, 18 two-tone colors combinations
2:58
to choose from, five interior color
3:01
combinations, and four convertible roof
3:03
colors. This car's original colors were
3:05
canary yellow and jet black. It was
3:07
repainted 40 years ago, and the car's
3:10
interior and seat headlining material
3:11
are not original, but they're exactly as
3:14
the originals, and they were replaced 30
3:15
years ago.
3:17
So, in the '50s, just about everything
3:18
was optional, including the heater and
3:21
defroster, directionals, radio,
3:23
day-night inside mirror, outside
3:24
mirrors, vanity mirrors, dual exhaust,
3:27
gear gas tight door bright work, sport
3:30
molding, and rear bumper wings, all of
3:32
which this car has. This is a very
3:33
highly optioned car. The only
3:35
non-factory options on this car are the
3:38
bright work around the headlights,
3:39
fender skirts, and FM radio converter.
3:42
This is also the first model year
3:44
Plymouth to have fins, which the mark
3:46
would retain through 1960. It's also the
3:48
first year that they had uh a different
3:52
hood ornament. It it wasn't ship sails.
3:53
If you look at our 30s Plymouth on the
3:56
side here or 40s I think it is, you'll
3:58
see it has the ship sails of the
3:59
Plymouth on it. Now was the standard
4:02
hood ornament up until this point and
4:04
this is the last model year to use 15-in
4:07
wheels up until the modern era. Hey,
4:09
moving on to our 1956
4:12
Dodge Custom Royal Lancer. Now as we
4:15
said we're following the path upwards.
4:17
You started out with the Plymouth
4:19
but if you were a remote park guy and no
4:21
power no car, you went up to a Dodge.
4:23
That was your next rung in the ladder.
4:25
So this car is also owned by Russ Teague
4:28
Restored Relics, Steve White and he has
4:30
owned this car since 2012. It is a
4:32
numbers matching vehicle. This car has
4:35
been used in three weddings. So this car
4:37
was assembled in 1956 at the Dodge Main
4:40
Assembly Plant in Hamtramck, Michigan
4:43
which is a suburb which is fully
4:45
surrounded by the city of Detroit. It is
4:47
adjacent to Highland Park where the
4:50
Chrysler headquarters were at the time.
4:52
And this car was originally sold at
4:54
Gilmore Motors in New Haven,
4:55
Connecticut. Manufacturer's suggested
4:57
retail price for this car in 1956
5:00
was $2,697.
5:03
It doesn't sound much more expensive
5:05
than the Plymouth but in 1956 dollars
5:08
this was a much more expensive car.
5:11
Total production of Dodge in 1956 was
5:14
only 233,686.
5:17
So they sold a lot less Dodges
5:19
than Plymouths at the time. So maybe a
5:22
little more exclusive, a little more
5:23
expensive.
5:25
This car has the base Super Red Ram 315
5:29
cubic inch poly two-barrel V8 rated at
5:32
218 horsepower.
5:35
The poly V8 was a semi
5:37
semi-hemispherical chamber on the
5:39
engine. Later on they found out that it
5:41
really offered no benefit. They went to
5:42
the wedge in the 60s but this has the
5:45
two-barrel uh
5:47
poly version of the V8. From there, you
5:50
can move up to the four-barrel version
5:52
of the poly V8. That was rated at 230
5:55
horsepower. And then, of course, if you
5:58
wanted to go a little higher, of course,
6:00
you could get a Hemi in this. The Hemi
6:03
was the same block. It's a 315,
6:06
but they put the hemispherical
6:07
combustion chamber head on it. And
6:09
basically, that means it's half a circle
6:11
with the spark plug located in the top.
6:14
And then, you got 260 horsepower, and
6:16
that was in the D500
6:18
that you get that. And then, if you had
6:20
some factory connections, you could get
6:22
the D500-1
6:24
with dual four-barrel carburetors.
6:27
315 cubic inches, also, but that was
6:29
rated at 295 horsepower. So, that was
6:33
basically a race car. If you wanted to
6:35
go racing in NASCAR in '56, this was the
6:37
car to do it in.
6:39
Standard transmission was the
6:41
three-speed manual with overdrive, and
6:44
fully automatic two-speed power flight
6:46
was an option, and this car, again, has
6:48
that option.
6:50
So, that was the two available
6:51
transmissions in the car, and this car
6:53
was a V8 only. There was no six-cylinder
6:56
in the Custom Royal Lancer.
6:58
This was the most expensive in the
7:00
series for Dodge. It came in four body
7:02
styles, two-door hardtop, which this is,
7:05
four-door sedan, four-door hardtop, and
7:07
two-door convertible. And then, you had
7:09
five interior options for colors, and
7:12
four different convertible roofs if you
7:14
had that. One interesting marketing uh
7:17
on this was the La Femme option. This
7:19
was marketed towards women.
7:22
Chrysler noted that, "Hey, 50% of the
7:24
population are women, so why don't we
7:26
market a car directly for women?" It
7:28
would be painted in Misty Orchid and
7:31
Regal Orchid, which in basic terms were
7:33
lavender and white. It had special
7:35
pattern seat covers, headliner,
7:38
carpeting, interior paint, and it came
7:40
with special accessories such as a
7:42
designer purse, and umbrella. So, those
7:45
came as standard with the La Femme
7:47
option. I appreciate your attention and
7:49
hope you enjoyed this presentation.
